Belize - General Facts about the Country
Belize is a small country in Central America, formerly known as British Honduras. It is a member of the Commonwealth, having gained independence in 1981. It is also a member of CARICOM (Caribbean Community). Geographically it is within the hurricane belt, being on the Caribbean side of Central America. The climate is tropical and generally hot and humid, with rainy season lasting from May to November. Belize is very small geographically as well as having a small population. The territory is only 8,867 square miles (22,960 km2), holding only 294,385 inhabitants (2007 estimate). The principal language (commercially) is English. However, Spanish and Belizean Creole are also spoken. The country has a parliamentary democracy, and the current head of state is the Queen of Belize (notably, Queen Elizabeth II of the UK). However, in practice, executive authority is exercised by the Prime Minister and his cabinet. The currency in Belize is the Belizean Dollar (BZD), which is about equivalent to 50 US Cents. |
