Hong Kong - Country Profile
Population: almost 7 million (UN, 2006) Area: 1,098 sq km (424 sq miles) Major Languages: English is spoken commercially, but Chinese (mainly Cantonese, with some Mandarin) is also the official language. Chinese is typically spoken locally. Monetary Unit: Hong Kong Dollar Exchange Controls: None Legal System: Common Law court system. Hong Kong's constitution allows for the development of democratic processes. However, Beijing can veto changes to the political system, which may lead to slow political reform. Hong Kong is governed under the principal of "one country, two systems", wherein China agreed to give the territory a high degree of autonomy and to preserve its economic and social systems for 50 years from the date of the hand-over from the British (1997). This means that China controls the foreign and defence policies, but Hong Kong has its own currency and customs status. The economy is principally service-based, with a major corporate and banking centre, as well as being a conduit for China's growing exports. To review Hong Kong Legislation, please see the Bilingual Laws Information System.
